Tales of the 12th Century
Snail Tales and the Cambridge Storytellers took children on a trip into the past to meet characters from the history of Ely Cathedral last Saturday.
Dressed as the Benedictine monk Roger of Markyate to tell the extraordinary story of Christina, the Abbess of St Alban's. 900 years ago, Christina received help from the Archbishop of Canterbury to flee her parents, who were trying to force her into a marriage she didn't want. Christina went on to spend almost 6 years in hiding, most of which inside a room barely wide enough for her shoulders!
Christina's story was the earliest of several characters in Ely Cathedral's children's event. Children were each given a Time Passport, which allowed them to travel back through the centuries to meet nurses, clergy, saints and merchants from the Fens' rich history.
